Black-white SAT gap grew from 189 points in 1988 to 204 points in 2005. Average black SAT score reached only 864 versus 1068 for whites. Whites from families under $10,000 scored 993, beating national black average by 129 points. Rich blacks over $100,000 scored 85 points below all whites and 139 below matched whites. Poor whites under $10,000 outscored blacks from $80,000-$100,000 families by 61 points. Blacks took fewer advanced courses: 35% trig vs 47% whites, 14% calculus vs 28% whites. Only 37% blacks ranked top 20% in high school vs 57% whites. Blacks 0.7%-0.79% score 700+ on math/verbal vs 6%-6.3% whites. Only 244 blacks scored 750+ math nationwide vs 33,841 total. Whites 11 times likelier than blacks to hit 750+ on either section. Blacks comprise 1-2% of top SAT scorers despite 10% of test takers. Gap widened over past 17 years despite slight black gains. New writing section may shrink gap via grader bias favoring blacks. Almost no blacks qualify for top universities on SAT alone. High black schools underperform due to funding, staffing, tracking into low tracks.
