Pomeranchuk collaborated with Landau on light scattering. He joined Soviet nuclear program under Kurchatov in 1943. Pomeranchuk led theory at ITEP and advanced neutron research for reactors. He predicted helium-3 entropy lower as liquid than solid. Pomeranchuk worked briefly on thermonuclear weapons at Arzamas-16. Phenomena named after him include pomeron, Pomeranchuk instability, and cooling effect. He earned two Stalin Prizes in 1950 and 1952. Pomeranchuk pioneered Regge theory with Gribov. He initiated proton-beam therapy research before dying of cancer in 1966.
