A. sediba dated to 1.98 million years ago in South Africa. Coexisted with Paranthropus robustus and Homo ergaster/erectus. Brain volume 350-440 cc like other australopithecines. Juvenile MH1 face resembles Homo with reduced brow ridge and prognathism. Small teeth approach early Homo size. Pelvis enables humanlike stride. Foot indicates hyperpronating gait mixing bipedalism and arboreality. Diet exclusively C3 forest plants including bark, like chimps unlike other hominins. Upper body apelike for climbing. Narrow upper chest limits running. Broad lower chest humanlike. Long curved fingers suggest arboreal grip. Hand allows precision grip for tools. Birth canal permits non-rotational birth unlike humans. Growth shows facial bone resorption unlike other australopiths. MH1 had bone tumor, earliest hominin cancer. Fell to death in cave trap. Phylogenetic position unstable, possibly A. africanus sister. Homo-like traits may be juvenile or convergent. Contemporaneous with early Homo rules out ancestry.
