Site discovered in 1960s during Serbian dam construction. Excavated 1965-1971 by D. Srejovic. Three settlement levels from 6000-4000 BCE. First two levels Mesolithic hunter-gatherers heavy on fishing. Trapezoidal houses with stone foundations and walled hearths. Over 80 burials inside and around houses. Third level Neolithic Starčevo culture with sheep, goats, pigs, cattle bones. Unique massive pebble human head sculptures. No parallels in Mesolithic Europe or Near East. Sculptures likely cultic depicting gods or ancestors. First monumental sculpture in European art. Site flooded after dam activation.
