Shun succeeded Yao for virtues over bloodline. Shun endured father's repeated murder plots with unwavering loyalty. Confucians hailed Shun as ideal ruler for insight, prudence, gentleness, sincerity. Shun tasked Yu with flood control, naming him successor. Shun ranks first in Twenty-Four Examples of Filial Piety. Shun was last of Five Emperors, predecessor to Yu the Great.
