Pintupi Nine roamed Gibson Desert traditionally for 40,000 years until overlooked in 1950s roundups. Family walked 40km daily between waterholes in extreme heat. Drank goanna lizard blood for hydration when waterholes dry. Discovered by relatives who mistook them for evil spirits. Extremely fit with no fat upon medical exam. Quickly caught whitefella diseases like colds. Diabetes and obesity now rife in their communities. One brother Payirti fled back to bush unable to handle community conflicts. Seduced into settlement by taste of sugar. Adjusted poorly at first burying money and burning oranges. All siblings except Payirti became internationally recognized artists. Maintained bond to land signing massive Indigenous Protected Area. Survived as toughest desert nomads on planet. Father refused to take family to settlements. Hid from planes thinking them devils. Used crashed plane rope to carry goannas. Married per strict skin group rules upon contact. Community life exposed them to alcoholism and sniffing.
