Sexual selection for brightness and novelty created diverse light hair, eyes, and pale skin in northern Europeans.

Europeans particularly northern and eastern have unusually diverse bright hair colors from black to red. Europeans have eye colors from brown to blue gray hazel green. European skin is pale almost albino-like. Color diversity more developed in women than men. Sexual selection favors eye-catching brightness and novelty. Novel mutations spread until common losing novelty. Many alleles exist for European hair and eye color. High ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous variants indicates strong selection. Color diversity developed over short time. Women outnumbered men on mate market due to low polygyny. Few men could support second wife and children. High male death risk from long hunting distances. Sexual selection stronger at higher latitudes with less polygyny and more male risk. Strongest on continental steppe-tundra with men hunting herds over long distances. Steppe-tundra once covered area of modern diverse coloration.
