Çayönü Tepesi is early village site in southeastern Turkey at 38° 16′ N, 39° 43′ E. Site dates to about 7000 B.C. 1972 excavations by Joint Istanbul-Chicago Prehistoric Project uncovered evidence. Architectural remains are most remarkable for the date. Domesticated food plants present from occupation beginning. Animal domesticates absent until later major prehistoric phase. Only dogs appear as early animal domesticates. Site represents perennial settlement in Near East. Focus on early architecture and domestication sequence.
