Teeth and jaw fragments discovered in Sangiran, Java in 1941 and 1952. Initially named Meganthropus paleojavanicus. Additional remains found in 1948 at Swartkrans, South Africa named Meganthropus africanus. Scant fossils prevent definitive classification. Commonly proposed as Homo erectus subspecies. Frequently compared to Australopithecus, Paranthropus, or Gigantopithecus. Specimens include Sangiran 6, Sangiran 8, Sangiran 33/BK 7905, Meganthropus D, Sangiran 27, Sangiran 31, and Meganthropus III.
