Titriş Höyük ancient samples yield 10 CRS and 2 single-mutation mtDNA in first 400 HVR1 bases. Authors rule out team contamination but admit results surprising and problematic. Modern Anatolia has only 8% CRS and 15% single-mutation mtDNA. 83% CRS likelihood in random Anatolians is 1 in a million. Even in Europeans it's 1 in 30,000. No modern population matches this CRS ratio. Samples unlikely all related per scientists. Two single-mutation samples also unexpectedly rare at 1 in 38 odds. Results suggest ancient Anatolian mtDNA hugely different from today's. High hg H in modern Turks (28.7%), Azeris (29%), Adygeis (28%), Armenians (20%) but nowhere near 83%. Study done in two labs independently. Authors call it pilot study, warn against definitive conclusions. Full haplogroups impossible from HVR1 alone – many non-H share CRS. Further Titriş Höyük DNA studies planned. Findings provide pre-Indo-European Anatolian mtDNA baseline.
