BC5 is a fairly complete lower jaw recovered in 1974 from Border Cave square T20. ESR dating of BC5 tooth fragment yields best age estimate of 74±5 ka. BC5 buried at beginning of layer 3WA deposition. Dating refutes claims BC5 from post-MSA grave around 35-39 ka. SF and N assays unreliable for Border Cave hominid ages. Previous ESR dates recalculated 2-4% younger with cosmic dose. Direct chronometric dating essential for Border Cave fossils. Layer 1WA above 3WA dated to 35-39 ka by U-series and radiocarbon. BC5 crown fragment of 4.6 mg used for ESR without damage. All prior dating methods on Border Cave show inconsistencies.
