Is Homo sapiens polymorphic [multiracial]? Human taxonomic diversity and its implications
Go to the source page

Below is a summary of the study by Michael A. Woodley, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium. Homo sapiens exhibits a level of morphological and genetic diversity comparable to or greater than many species officially recognized as polymorphic. The claim that “biological races do not exist” is based on Lewontin's flawed reasoning of analyzing individual traits rather than their correlated sets. Races are real correlational structures of genetic and phenotypic traits, not arbitrary social constructs. The four main definitions of race (essential, taxonomic, population, and lineal) are in practice equivalent and describe the same biological phenomenon. Humans can be classified by race visually with an accuracy exceeding 75%, which meets the classic criterion for subspecies used in animals. The level of heterozygosity and FST in humans is higher than in many mammalian species divided into numerous subspecies. Treating Homo sapiens as a monotypic species is inconsistent with the principles applied in zoology to other animals. Genetic data consistently point to the existence of approximately five major continental clades corresponding to classical races. From the perspective of the phylogenetic species concept, it is possible that there are several dozen distinct human phylogenetic units. Contemporary population mixing is not intense enough to eliminate their evolutionary distinctness. Mating preferences limit gene flow between races even in the absence of geographical barriers. The differences between races are too small to consider them separate biological species in Mayr's sense. Attempts to prove the existence of multiple human species based on selected genetic distances are methodologically flawed. Denying the biological reality of races hinders the reconstruction of recent human evolution. Ignoring racial differences in medicine leads to poorer treatment, higher mortality, and erroneous clinical decisions.
