Sometimes one photon can trigger a whole avalanche of subsequent ones. And then a barely illuminated material begins to glow very brightly. For the first time, avalanche emission of photons in nanomaterials has been achieved. The research involving Poles, which may find applications in super-resolution microscopy, was featured on the cover of the prestigious weekly Nature.
