The characteristic striations visible on the screen when a monitor or someone in striped clothing is filmed - this is a well-known example of the so-called moiré (or moiré effect). Moiré may have made things difficult for filmmakers and printers, but now it's coming in handy for nanotechnologists - it turns out that it gives new properties to layered materials such as graphene.
