"It's absolutely common," - he says. And lucrative. "We've all probably paid this person about 60,000 rupees." India's scam industry has grown along with other types of organized fraud, such as call center scams, and is fueled by a similar mentality, says Snigdha Poonam, author of a new book about the ambition and cunning of India's youth. In 2015, Bihar made headlines around the world when footage emerged showing parents literally climbing up a five-story building to give answers to their children taking exams inside. This year, to ensure fairness, the state installed surveillance cameras in exam rooms and ordered all students to leave their shoes and socks outside the door.
