The CDC surveyed 17,508 students from 152 schools across the country. According to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based on 2021 data, about 1 in 4 high school students identify as LGBTQ. In 2021, 75.5% of high school students identified as heterosexual, according to the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS). Among high school students, 12.2% identified themselves as bisexual, 5.2% as questioning their orientation, 3.9% as other, 3.2% as gay or lesbian, and 1.8% said they did not understand the question. The CDC reports that the number of LGBTQ students has increased from 11% in 2015 to 26% in 2021.
