The discovery of the Cro-Magnon 1 skull: a trace of Homo sapiens evolution in Europe.
Go to the source page

The discovery of the Cro-Magnon 1 skull in 1868 was one of the first pieces of evidence for the existence of the Homo sapiens species. The find came from a cave in Les Eyzies, France, and was dated to about 32-30,000 years ago. Skull features indicate the anatomy of modern humans, and injuries in some of the specimens found suggest that people of this period led a hard life, supported by group care.
