A recent study of the genomes of Neanderthals and Denisova cave man in Russia is changing our understanding of the origins of modern humans. Humans outside Africa inherited about 3% of their genomes from Neanderthals, and people in Australia and New Guinea inherited up to 5% from Denisovans. The process of the origin of modern humans was more complex than previously thought.
