Analysis of patterns of genetic variation among 3,845 individuals from four continental regions provides insight into human evolutionary history and genetic research design. Variation has been uncovered in the populations of Latin America, South Asia and southern Europe, and the determinants of population structure in India and the north-south gradient in Europe have been identified.
