Research has shown that the ancestors of the New Guinea and Bougainville Islanders inherited part of their ancestry from the Denisovans, a hominid group from Siberia. Denisova admixture is found in many populations in Asia and Oceania, but not all. This suggests that Denisovans must have lived in a wide geographic and ecological range.
