Just 12,000 years ago, a hybrid of a human and an archaic hominid lived in what is now Nigeria. All indications are that the hybrid successfully passed on genes to the next generation, shaping the local population there. Research on a skull from the Late Paleolithic period at Iwo Eleru in Nigeria has shown similarities to African specimens from the Late Pleistocene. Uranium dating confirmed the Pleistocene age of the burial. The findings suggest an archaic population structure in Africa and a complex process of human evolution.
