Europeans the only ones without a significant hominid gene pool? Research suggests that Neanderthals did not contribute to the mitochondrial diversity of modern Europeans. The model of genetic continuity between early modern European humans and modern Europeans has received support. Admixture of Neanderthals with modern humans was minimal. The authors ruled out the influence of purgative selection as a major factor in the differences, analyzing only neutrally evolved regions of the genome. Based on Rind and Rpop statistics, and simulations using Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), it was shown that the single-pulse model of introgression does not fit the data. The best explanation is a two-pulse model: the first, shared by the ancestors of Europeans and Asians, and the second, an additional influx of Neanderthal genes into the ancestors of Asians.
