In 1923, leaders from North India's Ahir and Maharashtrian Gavli established the All India Yadav Mahasabha (AIYM) so that they could claim a Yadav identity by Sanskritizing their constituents and re-imagining their glorious past, claiming to be descendants of the mythical Yad . The Gollas of the state of Hyderabad , led by their regional association, the Hyderabad Rashtra Yadava Mahajana Samajam, asked the census commissioner to change their Golla, Gawli, Gollawar and Ahir caste names to Yadava. Similarly, in 1930, the Madras state government ordered the introduction of the term "Yadava" instead of the terms Golla, Idaiyan, Gopa, Gopi or Gowla in all official documents. This was in response to an appeal by the Yadukula Maha Sangham of Godavari district in the eastern part of the country .
